Solar Wind: Earth Magnetosphere
Scientific paper
Properties of solar wind plasma in the magnetosheath are analyzed, including a) the shape of the ion distribution function, which is shown to be a combination of three populations ("core", "shoulder", and "tail") with significantly different parameters, and b) the variability of the distribution function and hydrodynamic parameters, which is shown to exceed the corresponding variability for solar wind by roughly an order of magnitude. Selective measurements are used to compare the proton and alpha particle parameters in the magnetosheath. In many cross sections of the magnetosheath the velocity and temperature of the distribution "core" for alpha particles turned out to be significantly greater than the velocity (by ≍100 km/sec) and temperature (by ≍10 times) of the distribution "core" for protons.
