Conventional Big bang explanations of large-scale structure, the origin of light elements and of the microwave background have run into serious conflicts with observation, conflicts that have not been resolved by the introduction of wholly ad-hoc hypotheses about dark matter, dark energy and other unobserved entities. In contrast, plasma-based theories have succeed in accurately predicting observations, and even new observed phenomena. Plasma-based theories, closely linked to laboratory experiments, have provided models for quasars, large-scale structures, the microwave background and the origin of the light elements that do not require a Big Bang. The observed fading of radio sources with distance was predicted in advance by plasma theories. Plasma phenomena may as well be the explanation for the observed anomalous redshifts. An overview of these plasma theories and the basic plasma phenomena they rest on is presented here.
