The nonlinear behavior of a finite-amplitude Alfven wave beam propagating in an ideal and uniform magnetoplasma is studied using the multiple scale method. It is shown that nonlinearities lead to beam defocusing which ultimately leads to plasma acceleration in the beam region. The relevance of this acceleration mechanism for astrophysical plasmas is pointed out.
