Ground based magnetic field observations were carried out successfully during the operational phase of the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS). Information was gained about ionospheric and magnetospheric current flows during magnetospheric substorms. New magnetometers are planned for measurements during the operational phase of EISCAT. A north-south line along the Swedish-Finnish border will be made up of stations at Soeroeya/Norway, Alta/Norway, Kautokeno/Norway, Muonio/Finland, and Pello/Finland. Two further instruments are planned at the Finnish sites Kilpisjarvi and Kevo. The data will be recorded digitally, thus quick dissemination will be possible. The magnetometer data are useful for support of sounding rocket missions to study ionospheric and/or magnetospheric phenomena.
