Planner, written in C++, is a modular planning program that takes observatory and target data and prints out an observing guide for the night. The system is unique in that it uses C++'s modular programming methods to let the observer easily integrate new types of astronomical objects into the planning software. The program is based on a BASIC program of the same name written at Appalachian State University in the late 1980s, which in turn was based on a program written at the University of Florida in the early 1970s. The current version is for planning observations of eclipsing binary systems, but modifying the program for new targets is trivial. Source and binaries are freely available for DOS and UNIX platforms, and documentation will be available on-line.
