The first extra-solar planet orbiting a solar-type star, 51 Peg, was announced five years ago, based on precise radial-velocity measurements. End of August 2000 about 50 such objects are known and their number is still growing regularly. These systems confirm some of the features predicted by the standard theory of star and planet formation, but massive candidates with small orbital separation or large eccentricities are common and were generally unexpected. A review of some of the main detection methods is given. The main prominent discoveries of the past five years are recalled, with special mentions to the latest news. The properties of the detected systems are described, emphasizing 1) the questions set by the peculiarities of the new planets (large mass, large eccentricity, small separation) and the proposed answers and 2) the first statistical trends pointed out from the sample gathered so far (clear different formation processes for planet and binaries from the planetary mass and orbital-element distributions, the high metal content of stars hosting planets). Finally, future promising techniques for exoplanet detection are described as well.
