We describe a new approach to the study of oceanic planetary waves in longitude/time plots of altimeter data, and its application to TOPEX/POSEIDON data over the North Atlantic. Rather than evaluating the mean properties of the waves (as for instance could be done with the Fourier transform or the Radon transform) we identify every wave (soliton) by fitting a four-parameter wave model to narrow subsets of the longitude/time plot built around any given longitude. The table of fitted wave crests and troughs is then analysed starting from the easternmost longitude and the propagation of any single wave event is fully reconstructed. Results in terms of amplitude, speed and zonal scale of the waves are in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions. In particular, the methodology clearly highlights the speed-up of the waves which almost double their speed as they move into the western sub-basin.
