A systematic analysis of planetary wave activities is performed over 3-month winter periods from 1956 to 1989. Winter months are grouped into 5 categories of circulation patterns, according to blocking activity during the month. The large -scale characteristics of circulation patterns are compared by analyzing the statistics from energetic related parameters. Differences among categories are apparent in amplitude and kinetic energy of zonal wavenumber one, nonlinear interactions among planetary waves, and SST anomalies in the Pacific and Atlantic. Differences may result from internal dynamical processes and slow changes in external forcing. Differences in distribution of winter months among categories were apparent during the three subperiods 1956 -1966, 1967-1978 and 1979-1989. Time series of amplitudes and kinetic energy of planetary waves and first principal components of SST indicate visible differences among the subperiods. Differences were also found in SST anomalies on the Pacific and Atlantic. These results seem to provide evidence of climatological variation at approximately a ten-year interval.
