Planetary entry probes carry a variety of "simple" instrumentation to characterize the profiles of basic atmospheric physical properties and composition, in addition to sophisticated chemical analyses and imagers. I survey these "simple" sensors, noting technological improvements in conventional atmospheric structure instruments as well as a number of less well-known instruments such as shock-layer radiometers, acoustic and electric instruments.
