The observational record concerning planetary nebulae with close binary nuclei is surveyed, in light of a model for the formation of such nebulae which predicts a characteristic, nonspherical morphology. Although agreement is found between the morphological prediction of the model and the observed shapes of M2-9, NGC 6164-5, and MZ 3, cases are found in which different observations yield different results with respect to central star variability.
