Fifteen years of exoplanet discoveries have dramatically expanded the observational foundation against which theories of planet formation can be tested. I will review what we have learned as a result of these discoveries, and how our emerging understanding of the typical outcome of planet formation in extrasolar planetary systems fits in with knowledge of the Solar System. Both lines of evidence point to the critical role of post-formation evolution in shaping the final architecture of planetary systems. I will emphasize the importance of gaining a better observational understanding both of the typical properties of outer planetary systems, and of the interplay between giant and terrestrial planet formation processes.
