We report X-ray observations of the celestial source J1550-564 by the Polar Ionospheric X-ray Imaging Experiment (PIXIE) on the POLAR satellite. PIXIE is normally used to image the earth's aurora in 2-12 keV X-rays from an orbit with an apogee 9 earth radii above the north pole. The source J1550-564 was first discovered by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer as announced in IAU Circular 7008. During the time interval 7 September to 9 October 1998 J1550-564 appeared in the PIXIE field of view and was observed for six hours out of each 18 hour orbit. The source intensity in the X-ray energy range 2-12 keV grew rapidly and reached a peak of 25 photons/cm2 s on 20-21 September. By 24 September the intensity had fallen to about 6 photons/cm2 s and remained near that level for the rest of the observations. We present the light curve and daily X-ray spectra from J1550-564.
