The magnetic de Laval nozzle is used to explain the formation of bipolar jets: the thermal pressure inside the jet is balanced by the magnetic pressure of the longitudinal field outside. The Kelvin-Hemlholtz instability of this equilibrium base state is studied, and an analytic solution for the resonant modes is derived. This family of solutions can explain many of the observed features of the knotty structure of the jets, including the spacing between the knots, the high motion, and the optical invisibility during the expanding portion of the jet.
