Physical conditions in the HH39 object are analysed using images taken in the light of Hα , [SII]lambda 6716 Angstroms, [SII]lambda 6731 Angstroms, and [NII]lambda 6584 Angstroms. Two-dimensional maps of the [SII]{lambda 6731}/{lambda 6716} ratio, resultant electron density, and the excitation - dependent ratios [SII]{lambda lambda 6716+6731}/H alpha , and [NII]lambda 6584/H alpha are calculated. Trends across the object place limitations on bow-shock and jet models of the object. A wide-field search for further shock activity in the R Monocerotis region, using images in the light of Hα and [SII]lambda lambda 6716+ 6731, shows that HH39 is isolated and probably not part of a larger flow.
