The use of mercury-cadmium-telluride (MCT) and lead-tin-telluride (LTT) photovoltaic devices for sensing systems operating in the 8-14 micron wavelength band is discussed. Manufacturing techniques, as well as low- and high-frequency performance characteristics of the semiconductors, are analyzed. Devices exhibiting performance characteristics very near the thermal limit at 77 K are described. For applications requiring a high response rate, MCT systems may be preferable, though for cases requiring uniformity of response and compatibility with mass production processes the LTT option may be favored.
