Sunspots: Umbrae, Solar Photosphere

Having the strongest magnetic fields in the photosphere, sunspot umbrae are thought to allow only slowest photospheric flows. Our analysis of MDI observations of Doppler velocities, continuum intensities, and longitudinal magnetic field strengths from four decaying sunspots reveals horizontal flows of order of several hundred m/s. Two of the four spots show horizontal outflows within their umbrae, and the other two show inflows. Such high speeds actually represent the fastest large-scale flows in the photosphere except for Evershed flows and moat flows. In the quiet photosphere, supergranular flows have much lower speeds. Highspeed horizontal flows in umbrae are compatible with a cluster sunspot model. This model, however, has to be modified to extend flux bundles up to the photospheric level. In a modified cluster model, photospheric plasma can flow through field-free regions between flux bundles. To be compatible with smooth looks of sunspot umbrae, the typical size and spacing of flux bundles should be much smaller than spatial resolutions achieved until now.
