The generation and annihilation of electron-positron pairs by the high-energy electron-positron-photon cascade which occurs in the hot plasma of sources of both gamma and X-rays (such as NGC 4151, 3C 273, and Cen A) are investigated analytically. Expressions describing the absorption of gamma rays by a photon gas are derived and used to calculate the critical dimension of the photoproduction region: 10 to the 18th cm for 3C 273, 5 x 10 to the 15th cm for NGC 4151, and 10 to the 14th cm for Cen A. The differential spectra of the electrons and positrons produced in an isotropic photon cloud are determined and presented graphically. It is found that the results also apply to clouds in which only one of the two groups of photons is isotropic, suggesting the application of this analysis to problems such as electron scattering by magnetic inhomogeneities.
