It is shown that soft protons with trajectories close to spherical orbits can produce e(+) e(-) near the event horizon of a rotating black hole which has a net electric current. The parameters of the orbits of uncharged particles near the event horizon of a Kerr-Newman black hole are determined, and the results are discussed within the framework of general black hole theory. Emphasis is given to rotating black holes which are near to the extreme state due to induction of the electric charge upon accretion of the plasma with a regular magnetic field. Supermassive accreting black holes are identified as an example of a black hole approaching an extreme state.
