The cosmic background radiation is considered to be the electromagnetic relict radiation from the hot big bang phase of the universe. Its fate is thought to decouple from that of matter after the recombination to neutral atomic matter has been completed. However, during the recombination era typical recombination photons are generated and superimposed onto the thermal Planck background radiation. It is shown that these photons give an imprint in form of a specific spectral feature to the common background radiation field which even today may be recognizable, especially at the high frequency end of its spectrum. Here the photons from the He III - He II recombination, since being of especially high frequencies and thus well separated from the thermal background, are of eminent importance because they are reflecting the early abundance of helium in the universe and its uniformity. If dark matter, required for cosmological reasons, would in fact be present in the form of normal matter participating in electromagnetic recombination then these spectral background features should even be easily identifiable.
