The results of a programme of photographic photometry of the core of the powerful X-ray cluster Abell 1146 are presented. A deep IIIa-J plate taken at the prime focus of the Anglo-Australian Telescope was used in this investigation and it is shown that photometry to a given accuracy is possible to limits some 1.5 mag fainter than with the UK Schmidt telescope. Methods for the separation of stellar and galaxian images are described and isophotal magnitudes are determined for 410 galaxies in the field of the cluster. The luminosity function is constructed and discussed briefly.
