Spectral lines observed in television spectra of five meteor trails are identified. These include lines of N2(+) at 4278 A, Mg I at 5170 A, O I at 5577 A, Na I at 5890 A, Si II at 5960 A, and Ca II at 3968 A. A formation mechanism is proposed for the first negative system of the molecular nitrogen band in meteor and trail spectra, photometry of the observed lines is briefly discussed, and damping constants are determined for all but the Si II and Ca II lines. The damping constant obtained for neutral oxygen is found to be in good agreement with previously published data.
