BVRI CCD surface photometry of the rapidly variable BL Lac object AP Lib, is presented. The combination of high detector efficiency and photometric accuracy, good seeing and the low nuclear activity at the time of the observations allow a decomposition into nuclear and underlying galaxy components with greater precision than hitherto. The galaxy profile accurately follows a de Vaucouleurs law for ellipticals, at radii from 3 to >20 arcsec (>26 kpc). Structural parameters appear normal for a galaxy of its luminosity (MV = -22.81). The colour data shows a marked gradient towards redder colours at larger radii, the reverse of that usually seen in E galaxies. Ellipse fits indicate that AP Lib is seen almost face-on, with an essentially constant eccentricity ≤0.1. The optical energy spectrum of the quasi-stellar component is examined and appears to be approximately linear, with a spectral index, α, ≈-1.4(±0.1).
