Photoelectric observations in the V band have yielded a light curve for the optical counterpart of Cen X-3. The amplitude of the light variations is 0.14 mag, which rules out the possibility of a very low mass ratio. It is shown that the X-ray source, which is believed to be a neutron star, must have a lower mass limit close to 3 solar masses. The photometric properties indicate a distance of about 7 kpc. Besides a double wave due to the tidal distortion of the star, the light variations also show some intrinsic activity on a time scale of fractions of a minute. A radial velocity variation with an amplitude of 60 km per sec is predicted.
