The X-ray pulsar Vela X-1 (= 4U 0900-40) is a component of an X-ray binary whose primary is a typical early B type supergiant. Its X-ray pulse period is about 283 s. Observations with the Hakucho satellite in March 1980 indicated a significant increase in the X-ray pulse period. The authors report photoelectric narrow-band photometry obtained in February 1980 and spectroscopic observations from April 15, 1980. Their results show no significant variations that may be correlated with the sudden change of the X-ray pulse period.
