New data are presented relating to the photodissociation of H2 through absorption of ultraviolet radiation and spontaneous radiative dissociation, taking the dependence on the rotational quantum number explicitly into account. The first application of these results is to determine the structure of the atomic-to-molecular hydrogen transition zone in a static cloud in equilibrium. A comparison is made with the approximate method of radiative transfer introduced by Federman et al. (1979). The validity of the assumption of equilibrium is discussed.
