Photoionization and photodissociation rates in the circumstellar shell of α Ori are calculated for the UV radiation field of the chromosphere. It is found that the heavy atoms like Mg, Si, S, and Fe are ionized and the molecules SiH+, SiH, and SiO are destroyed. The grain heating by the UV radiation field of the chromosphere is calculated.
