A theoretical study of D-region photochemistry with artifical injection of NO and NO2 is presented. Numerical calculations are used to determine the main mechanisms responsible for variations of electron density and other components of the atmosphere. A quantitative analysis of the effect of diffusion is presented, and it is shown that this effect can increase substantially due to the appearance of concentration gradients in the perturbed region.
