The photo-dissociation cascade of medium-size isolated PAH cations has been studied with the PIRENEA experimental set-up, a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) mass spectrometer dedicated to astrochemistry. In the case of hydrocarbon species, broad-band visible and ultraviolet irradiation is shown to lead predominantly to hydrogen atom loss but also to dissociation patterns involving the loss of acetylene and diacetylene. These results emphasize the link between photolysis and thermolysis experiments and could provide information on both destruction and formation channels of large hydrocarbons in the interstellar medium.
