We propose to use Gemini-S and Phoenix to observe four ultracool dwarfs varying in spectral type from M8 to L8. These high resolution K- band observations will be the subject of modelling using the state-of- the-art Phoenix brown dwarf atmosphere code. The observations will be used to determine the temperature, surface gravity, and other parameters of these cool stars and brown dwarfs. The confrontation of observations with theory is needed to assess and improve the model atmosphere of ultracool dwarfs.
