Evidence (telescopic, photometric, deep space probe) on the shape, composition, orbits, rotation, and creating of the two Martian moons is reviewed. A description is offered of how the two moonlets would appear to an observer on the Martian surface (remote from the Martian poles, from where the moons are never within view), and the secular acceleration of Phobos and the synchronous rotation of Deimos are discussed. Difficulties hampering early attempts to locate the moons are recounted. Unexplained puzzles highlighted include: the nature of the regolith on the moons and how such small bodies can manage to retain a regolith; and the origin of the parallel grooves visible on the surface of Phobos.
