Galaxy Mergers: N-Body Simulations
Scientific paper
Using N-body simulations, the authors have studied the galaxy merger process. The simulations model the coalescence of a disk galaxy with a spheroidal system along different types of orbits. The authors discuss the theoretical isophotes and angular momentum distributions of the resulting merger remnants in an attempt to derive phenomenological characteristics which may allow to identify a merger remnant unambiguously.
