The linear response of a degenerate relativistic star to a first order phase transition occurring in its central core is studied. The analytical formulae for the changes in radius, energy and the moment of inertia are derived. These formulae are exact in the limiting case of a small condensed core, and can be used for the calculation of the effects of a neutron star corequakes implied by the first order phase transitions at supranuclear densities. The precision of the formulae is checked against exact results for the particular models of pion condensation and deconfinement of quarks in neutron stars.
