The bulk chemical composition of the upper mantle ('pyrolite') derived from experimental and petrological studies of the complementary relationships between basaltic magmas and refractory peridotites is described. The phase transformations which are experienced by pyrolite between depths of 100-800 km are reviewed, and used to explain the seismic P and S velocity profiles throughout this region. A model of mantle dynamics is proposed which is designed to reconcile the geochemical evidence on mantle reservoirs with recent data on physical and mineralogical constitution of the mantle.
