Phase shifts have been observed in the light-curve of the nearly perfectly sinusoidal Bursting Pulsar, GRO J1744-28, associated with the large X-ray bursts observed during the two outbursts in early 1996 and 1997 and during the quiescent period in between these outbursts. These phase shifts probe the interaction between the magnetosphere and the inner edge of the accretion disk. Such a probe can distinguish between models of accretion onto a magnetized neutron star. It may also explain why this source is unique among the observed stars in being the source of both regular type II (Accretion instability) X-ray bursts and X-ray pulsation.
