We have undertaken VLBI phase-referenced astrometric observations of a sample of 8 compact symmetric objects (CSOs). The long-term goal of this observing program is to measure the absolute proper motion of the approaching and receding jets typical to such objects, and further to determine whether these motions are symmetric with respect to the central source of activity. An overview of the project is given with emphasis on source selection and astrometric accuracy. Initial imaging results for three CSO/calibrator pairs are also presented.
