Topside sounding data obtained by Isis 2 during December 1972 and January 1973 was used to trace the pattern of anomalies of the ionospheric electron density profile associated with the magnetospheric cleft. Electron precipitation is noted which produces an ionizing effect, the height of maximum ionization rate being close to that of maximum F2 region density. Ionospheric heating by secondary electrons leading to a restructuring of the ionosphere and an increase of the vertical electron density is also found.
