The excitation mechanism for the permitted Fe II emission in the optical spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies and certain QSOs is considered. The recombination mechanism is ruled out, and optically thin and optically thick model calculations of both the resonance-fluorescence and collisional excitation mechanisms are performed and compared with spectrophotometric observations. It is found that the optically thin models do not match the observations well at all, that the inclusion of optical-depth effects produces Fe II emission spectra that more closely resemble the observations, and that the optically thick resonance-fluorescence models provide a generally good overall match to the observations. The applicability of these models and their consistency with other observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs are evaluated. The column density of the gas responsible for the Fe II emission is estimated, together with the size and mass of the emission cloud.
