High-resolution photographs of the Martian surface obtained by the Viking orbiters are examined which reveal geomorphologic structures related to the presence and modifying effects of ice in the soil. A comparative analysis of morphologic features in Martian and terrestrial periglacial zones is performed, and lander data on Martian surface thermodynamic conditions are evaluated. It is suggested that permafrost may have played a decisive role in forming massive and catastrophic Martian surface structures, such as the landslide in Valles Marineris and the collapse structures in the area near the Tharsis volcanic region. The results are shown to reinforce the hypothesis that both an active layer and permafrost are present in the Martian subsoil.
