The periodicity of variations in the contrasts of the ultraviolet formations on Venus is investigated based on earth-based observations of large-scale formations. Contrast measurements obtained in 1969 with a television system with photographic image recording and in 1975 by spectrophotometry were analyzed as a function of observation phase and for correlations with a cosinusoidal function. Both methods lead to values of 4.55 + or - 0.05 and 4.35 + or - 0.02 days for the periods of contrast variations observed in 1969 and 1975, respectively. Results suggest a lifetime on the order of 40 days for the large UV formations, and support assumptions of real changes in the periodicity of processes in the Venus atmosphere.
