Periodicities of solar activity have been observed for more than a century and are related to the dynamics of solar magnetic fields. Photolysis rates in the terrestrial atmosphere depend on the incident solar radiation, and should be sensitive to the periodicities in the solar spectrum, providing a stringent test of the current models of photochemistry. The column abundances of stratospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH) measured by the ground- based instrument at JPL's Table Mountain Facilities (TMF) have been used for this study. Beside the rather well-known 11-year solar cycle, periodicities of about 13.5, 27 and 50 days have been deduced from the TMF data. A 27-day cycle has also been deduced from the hydroxyl radicals measured by the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS). The one-dimensional Caltech/JPL photochemistry model has been used to investigate the influence of the 27-day solar cycle on OH. Solar spectral irradiance (version 5) data (115.5 299.5 nm) from SORCE/SOLSTICE of NASA have been used as input in the chemical model. Preliminary results show that the model captures the essential features of the 27-day variability, but the amplitude of 27-day cycle in the model OH is somewhat smaller than that in the observations.
