For a simple pendulum consisting of a spherical bob suspended by thin cords, we simultaneously carry out precision measurements of the period, T, and the maximum linear velocity, vmax, of the bob. By expanding T in terms of vmax2, we verify the large angle dependence of the period and carry out an accurate analysis of the effect of air friction on a sphere. We find that the force due to air friction is well described by two terms: one linear and one quadratic in velocity. We investigate the dependence of each term on the sphere's diameter for Reynold's numbers from 250 to turbulent flow.
