The quantum yield of numerous image tubes with broad spectral range was studied. The experimental set-up for the visible region is composed of a calibration lamp and interference filters. In the ultraviolet, a vacuum monochromator is used in combination with a calibrated photomultiplier. The precautions necessary to obtain accurate values of the quantum yield are discussed in detail. The results indicate that good performances are attained by some existing image tubes but large differences are observed between manufacturers and between individual tubes from the same batch.
