Propagation effects in pupil mapping systems prevents them to achieve the contrast they are designed for, that could lead to the detection of exo-planets, while the major caveat of shaped pupil solution is to considerably reduce the photon throughput. We developed and new method based on Huygens wavelets to explain this performance degradation of pupil mapping, and study the hybrid associations of PIAA systems and shaped pupils that has been introduced in order to compensate for these propagation effects. Performances for these hybrid designs are quantified by four quantities that are closely related: throughput, contrast level, Inner Working Angle and bandwidth. Separate analytical studies have highlighted the relationship between throughput and IWA and the one between bandwidth and contrast in the presence of aberrations. In this presentation we will use the aforementioned analytical method to relate all these four quantities and assess the performances of several types of hybrid designs. We will start by presenting our methodology and then apply it to several examples that have already been suggested in the literature. In a second part, we will particularly focus on solutions for which pupil mapping only provides a soft apodisation that is created using two sequential Deformable Mirrors that have a limited stroke. Such a solution is extremely attractive since it integrates together the starlight suppression system and the wavefront compensation, and thus will be carefully inspected both from a feasibility and a performances point of view.
