Empirical climatology models such as the NRLMSIS 2000 and Jacchia 70 (J70) are used to model the total neutral density of the thermosphere. These models are only good to about 15% (one sigma). This is due principally to the lack of good input data, which are limited to the solar flux (F10) and geomagnetic (Ap) indices. The inherent errors in these indices can result in short-term temporal model inaccuracies. However, these models also suffer from other anomalies such as inaccuracies in modeling of the semiannual variation, or high latitude heating effects. In this presentation, we compare the monthly climatologies from models such as NRL MSIS 2000 and J70 to the HASDM data from January to July of 2001. The HASDM data come from satellite drag differential corrections to the J70 model which corrects the model density field through a correction to the exospheric temperature distribution in J70. The data are at three hour resolution. Model comparison was examined for quiet and disturbed conditions. The comparisons show there are anomalies unique to each model which systematically vary with season in terms of their global distribution. Similar effects can be observed in the models during the disturbed periods. These errors indicate that it is not enough to improve the solar and geomagnetic input indices, but that there are other anomalies in the models which can be improved.
