Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) is a new pan-chromatic imager being developed for installation on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in 2008. The IR channel of the instrument will span a wavelength range of 0.8-1.7um and will provide a dramatic improvement in the IR science capability of HST. The focal plane of the IR channel is populated by a 1024x1024 HgCdTe detector array provided by Teledyne Imaging Systems (TIS).
Recent developments in the detector fabrication process have resulted in significant improvements in the scientific performance of these detectors. In particular, improvements to the substrate removal process have resulted in a dramatic increase in the quantum efficiency at wavelengths shorter than 1.5um. Further performance improvements have been achieved through the reduction in the number of hot pixels (dark current >0.4e/sec at 145K) in the detector arrays. We report on the results of the testing of new detectors at the NASA/GSFC Detector Characterization Laboratory and on the expected resulting sensitivity improvement in the near-IR imaging capability of HST.
