The facilities and operational experience during 1980 of the satellite tracking and ranging station at Kavalur, India, are discussed. The station is equipped with an Intercosmos satellite laser ranging system, in addition to a satellite tracking camera, timing equipment and data processing system. Target calibration for a fixed target located at a distance of 519.18 m from the radar has shown the three photomultipliers used to provide similar results, with an overall system accuracy on the order of 30 cm using both adaptive threshold and centroid detection techniques. Laser ranging data obtained is processed using least square polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials or long arc orbit fitting techniques with equivalent results for sufficiently large numbers of observations. The laser ranging system has been involved in the tracking of the GEOS A and GEOS C satellites for the determination of polar motion and variations in earth rotation. Improvements planned include the introduction of a three-stage image intensifier coupled with a low light level camera and a television guidance control system, and Kalman active filtering techniques in the laser range reduction program.
