It is shown analytically that fast cracks which develop in rocks during meteorite impacts may branch out and form shatter cones under certain conditions. A mathematical condition for the branching of fast cracks is formulated, and it is argued that the damage zone in a rock will be spread beyond the destroyed area by induced microcracks which can both increase and decrease the rock's strength due to interactions with each other. Experimental data obtained by testing rocks taken from the crater produced by the Sikhote-Alin meteorite are presented which confirm the theoretical conclusions.
