Following a major outburst at radio wavelengths in the quasar 3C 454.3, observations by means of very long baseline interferometry have revealed a superluminal increase in the size of the compact "core" region of the source and the appearance of a complex structure within it. Some features within this structure remained stationary with respect to each other, but others showed superluminal motion. This behaviour is distinctly different from that generally seen in superluminal sources.
