During the first phase of the Calibration/Validation activities different methods have been used to estimate the ASAR antenna radiation patterns. Initially the pre-flight patterns from the ASAR characterisation were used. Rainforest acquisitions and the use of calibration data confirmed and improved the estimations following the in-flight tuning of the T/R modules. The objective of this exercise of combining rainforest acquisition with calibration data was the achievement of maximum accuracy in the pattern estimation and the evaluation of the capabilities of the different estimation methods. This paper presents the results and conclusions of this exercise in view of using the calibration data, in particular the Module Stepping Mode as a fast and reliable method for estimating or change tracking of the beam radiation patterns. The detailed results of the estimation from rainforest acquisitions are presented in another paper.
