The basic principles in microwave remote sensing are given and the state of the art of ground-based, air- and spaceborne sensors is briefly reviewed. Selected references are listed, with emphasis on recent publications. Some subjective recommendations for future research, and possible trends in operational and experimental applications are discussed.
